Aztreonam, a monocyclic beta lactam antibiotic, has a broad antibacterial spectrum of gram negative bacteria including E. coli, Klebsiella pneumonial, Serratia marcescens, especially pseudomonas aeruginosa.
An open clinical trial was performed to evaluate clinical efficacy agin gram negative infections and its safety in 30 cases. The three patients were deleted due to uncooperation of patients.
The cure rate were 655 in total 27 cases : 75% in UTI, 50% in sepsis in aztreonam treated group. The similar results were seen in gentamicin treated group.
The side effect of the drug was minimal, but mild nausea & vomitting were present in 6.9% and mild elevation of serum alkaline phosphatase and SGOT/SGPT were noted in 14%, which were reversible.
Two cases showed mild decrease in hemoglobin and significant leukopenia was found in one case fully recovered after drug withdrwal.
